Sun and scalp damage

Scalp Damage from UV Radiation:

  • Sunburn: Just like the skin on the rest of your body, the scalp is susceptible to sunburn. Sunburn on the scalp can cause redness, peeling, and irritation, which weakens the skin's barrier and may lead to temporary hair shedding. If the scalp is sunburned repeatedly, it can also increase the risk of skin cancer.
  • Skin Aging: Chronic sun exposure can accelerate the aging of the skin, including the scalp, causing wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and thinning of the skin. This may weaken the hair follicles and could contribute to hair thinning or loss.

2. Damage to Hair:

  • Hair Dryness: UV rays can dry out the hair, making it more brittle and prone to breakage. This damage is more noticeable in people with lighter or colour-treated hair, as their hair is already more vulnerable to environmental damage.
  • Protein Damage: UV rays can break down the proteins in the hair (mainly keratin), leading to weakening and split ends, which makes hair more prone to breakage. This isn't technically "hair loss" but can lead to thinner-looking hair.
  • Scalp thinning, will also possibly lead to early hair loss.

3. Folate Depletion:

  • UV radiation can deplete folate (a B vitamin) levels in the skin, and low folate levels have been linked to hair loss. Healthy folate levels are important for hair follicle function and growth.

How to Protect Your Scalp and Hair from Sun Damage:

  1. Wear a Hat: A wide-brimmed hat provides the best protection for both your scalp and hair. It shields your scalp from direct sun exposure and helps reduce hair damage.
  2. Use Sunscreen on Your Scalp: If you have short hair or no hair, applying a scalp sunscreen (or regular sunscreen) can protect your scalp from sunburn. You can also use sun-protectant sprays made specifically for hair.
  3. Avoid Peak Sun Hours: Limit your time in direct sunlight, especially during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), when UV rays are strongest.
  4. Condition Your Hair: Use leave-in conditioners or UV-protectant hair products that can help prevent UV damage. Moisturizing hair masks can also restore hydration and protect hair from drying out.
  5. Hydrate Your Scalp: Ensure your scalp is well-moisturized to reduce irritation from sun exposure. You can use natural oils like coconut oil or argan oil, which help form a barrier against UV rays.

Summary:

While moderate sun exposure can have some beneficial effects, such as promoting vitamin D production, excessive exposure can cause scalp damage, hair breakage, and even contribute to hair loss over time. It's essential to take protective measures to safeguard both your scalp and hair from UV damage.

Dr Young specifically asks all patients to wear a cap/hat for atleast 3 months post hair restoration.
